Bloomberg: China Expands Exit Restrictions on Top AI Talent from Private Companies
ME AI news, May 26 (UTC+8), according to Bloomberg, China is restricting overseas travel for top private sector AI professionals such as Alibaba and DeepSeek, indicating that measures to protect technology and surpass the U.S. in key areas are being escalated.
Sources familiar with the matter say government agencies have begun imposing restrictions on individuals engaged in advanced AI work who are considered important to national strategic interests. This means they need approval from relevant departments before traveling abroad. These individuals requested anonymity due to discussing sensitive issues.
For years, Beijing has implemented travel restrictions on key personnel ranging from researchers at renowned universities to nuclear scientists and executives of state-owned enterprises. The government is now specifically targeting talent in the AI field. The sources say key industry professionals who have been informed of these restrictions include a mix of startup founders, researchers, and executives.
It is currently unclear how broadly these restrictions will affect employees across the industry, or what levels of experience or specific positions are targeted.
These measures highlight how top AI engineers are now regarded as strategic assets for the world’s second-largest economy. Most of China’s leading AI talent emerged after the ChatGPT era, mainly concentrated in domestic tech giants or private startups.
Sources say Beijing’s plan to restrict AI talent mobility may not be directly related to the Manus incident, but preventing technology leaks remains a core policy goal. However, this policy could force engineers with global ambitions to choose early in their careers whether to stay in China or go abroad. (Source: Bloomberg)
