AIMPACT News: On May 16 (UTC+8), in the Unsupervised Learning podcast, AI pioneer Yang LeKun put forward contrarian views on the limitations of large language models and discussed a development path for robotics technology. He explained the reasons for leaving Meta, as well as major disagreements with Geoff Hinton and Yoshua Bengio regarding the perspective on the Turing Award. The interview also covered his predictions for 2027, the new company AMI’s bet on world models, and compared OpenAI and Anthropic to Sun Microsystems. In addition, he advised PhD students to stop researching LLM, and shared sharp insights into AI safety, the mechanisms that drive breakthrough research, and Meta FAIR’s gains and losses. Hinton, Bengio, and their disagreements are so significant that the Turing Award trio are now each pursuing their own paths.

PhD students, don't mess with LLMs? When this statement comes from a Turing Award winner, lab leaders are going to have a headache.

Meta FAIR's gains and losses segment I want to hear more about; the internal perspective is much more accurate than external guesses.

Listening to anti-mainstream opinions feels good, but LLMs are indeed making money now, and the world model is still in the PPT stage.

Leaving Meta to start a new company, it seems they think the pace at big companies slows down research.

The robotics technology path + world model sounds like it’s meant to unify embodied intelligence with cognitive architecture.

Yang Likun's recent criticism of LLMs is quite harsh, but can the world model approach really succeed?
