I just looked up information about what time the Spanish stock exchange closes because I was confused about the schedules. It turns out that the Madrid Stock Exchange, which is the main one in Spain, opens at 9:00 am and closes at 5:30 pm local time. Quite different from other markets I know.
The interesting thing is that before it officially opens, there is an auction period from 8:30 am to 9:00 am. And after the normal close, there is another closing auction between 5:30 pm and 5:35 pm. So technically, the Spanish stock exchange has these two phases if you want to be precise about its closing time.
By the way, the Madrid Stock Exchange is part of the SIBE, which coordinates four different Spanish stock exchanges. But Madrid is the largest and where companies like BBVA, Santander, and Inditex are listed. The IBEX 35 index is based on the 35 most capitalized stocks in this market.
One thing I didn’t know is that the Spanish stock exchange only operates from Monday to Friday. It’s closed on Saturdays and Sundays. And there are also specific holidays when it doesn’t operate. For 2025, there were several closures due to holidays.
If you’re from Latin America and want to know what time the Spanish stock exchange closes in your time zone, it depends on where you are. From Mexico, it would be around 9:30 pm; from Argentina, 12:30 pm; from Peru, 10:30 pm. Each country has its own time difference.
The Madrid Stock Exchange has history; it was founded in 1831 when banks and railways were just starting to be traded. Later, other exchanges in different cities were added. It’s quite important to understand these schedules if you want to operate in the Spanish market because you can’t do anything outside those time frames.
