🌟🌟🌟Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a short-term, 3-step roadmap to bring native privacy directly to Ethereum's Layer-1. Instead of waiting for a monolithic, years-away overhaul or pushing all privacy responsibilities to Layer-2s and third-party apps, this roadmap focuses on pragmatic, modular upgrades that can be implemented soon.

1. Account Abstraction (AA) + FOCIL
- The Problem: Currently, privacy protocol transactions look structurally different from standard Ethereum transactions. Because of this, block builders and validators can easily identify them and choose to censor, delay, or block them without penalty.
- The Upgrade: By combining Account Abstraction (AA) with FOCIL (a fair inclusion mechanism), privacy transactions are treated as first-class citizens.
- The Impact: This prevents selective censorship by block proposers, ensuring that valid privacy-focused transactions get the same inclusion guarantees as standard, transparent transfers.
2. Keyed Nonces (EIP-8250)
- The Problem: Normal Ethereum accounts use sequential numbers (nonces) for transactions to prevent replay attacks. If multiple users try to withdraw from a shared privacy pool at the same time, the single nonce creates a bottleneck, forcing transactions to queue up sequentially.
- The Upgrade: EIP-8250 introduces keyed nonces, allowing each transaction to use its own nonce domain (derived from a privacy nullifier). This proposal is targeted for inclusion in the upcoming Hegota network upgrade.
- The Impact: Users can make concurrent, parallel withdrawals from shared privacy protocols without transactions failing or getting stuck behind others. Existing privacy apps can benefit from this immediately upon rollout without needing to rewrite their application layers.
3. Access-Layer Work (Kohaku & Private Reads)
- The Problem: Even if your transaction is private, simply checking your wallet balance or reading a smart contract can expose your IP address and behavioral patterns to the infrastructure providers facilitating the query.
- The Upgrade: This step focuses on closing side-channel data leaks. It includes Kohaku (a privacy and security toolkit for building safer wallets with private sending and key management) and Private Reads (a system for querying blockchain data).
- The Impact: Users will be able to check their balances and interact with apps without broadcasting their access patterns to the public or third-party node providers.
👀The Big Picture: By tackling censorship, transaction bottlenecks, and metadata leaks at the base layer, Ethereum is attempting to give ETH true "moneyness" qualities—making it viable for everyday untraceable payments and regulatory-compliant private stablecoins without relying heavily on easily targeted third-party mixers like Tornado Cash. $ETH
