Vitalik Buterin Says Ethereum Is Narrowing Its Core Mission
Vitalik Buterin says the Ethereum Foundation is moving toward a leaner role built around technical depth, long-term resilience, and reduced ecosystem control
ContentsEF Moves Toward A Leaner RoleAI Verification Becomes A Major PriorityEthereum Focuses On Fewer IntermediariesThe Ethereum co-founder said the foundation should work as one specialized node in Ethereum, not as its central authority
His comments place AI-assisted software verification, stronger consensus design, and fewer intermediaries at the center of the foundation’s next phase.
EF Moves Toward A Leaner Role
Buterin said the Ethereum Foundation is adjusting its work to focus on areas that directly support Ethereum’s durability. He stressed that his comments reflected his own technical view, not a formal board directive. He also noted that the foundation board has expanded while he has reduced his role in day-to-day management.
The shift follows a year that Buterin described as more focused and efficient for the foundation. He said the organization has improved its ability to set realistic goals and solve operational problems. That approach now supports a narrower mission tied to Ethereum’s long-term public value.
AI Verification Becomes A Major Priority
A major part of the strategy is AI-assisted formal verification. Buterin said recent advances in artificial intelligence have made provably bug-free software more realistic than before. The foundation now wants Ethereum to become a leading platform for highly reliable code.
Buterin framed this goal around Ethereum’s role as a censorship-resistant, open, private, and secure system. He argued that Ethereum should avoid chasing speed targets that weaken decentralization. Instead, scalable Layer 2 networks can handle throughput while the base layer protects trust and security.
The roadmap also includes stronger chain availability during major attacks. Buterin pointed to a design that keeps Ethereum reliable under difficult consensus conditions. He has long opposed relying on social recovery or hard forks as routine answers to large Byzantine failures.
Ethereum Focuses On Fewer Intermediaries
The foundation is also backing work that reduces reliance on intermediaries. Projects such as FOCIL, EIP-8141, and EIP-7701 aim to improve transaction inclusion and strengthen privacy. These efforts could support smart contract wallets, privacy tools such as Railgun, and applications including Kohaku.
Buterin said about $250 billion in ETH remains secured on Ethereum, making it a key financial asset in the ecosystem. He also said most of his net worth remains in ETH. However, he suggested that market promotion should fall more heavily on other groups that hold larger ETH positions.
The transition comes as the Ethereum Foundation faces staff changes. Several researchers have left or taken leave since April and May 2026. Still, Buterin’s message presents the shift as a move toward technical specialization rather than retreat.
