Vitalik Buterin Wants a More Independent Ecosystem, Reduces Ethereum Foundation's Role
Vitalik Buterin shared his views on a major step to promote ecosystem independence by trimming the role of the Ethereum Foundation (EF). Through a post on his personal X account on Sunday (5/24) local time, Vitalik emphasized that EF is not the center of the ecosystem, but only a small part with a specific mission within the Ethereum network ecosystem. Moving forward, EF will shrink and focus on long-term strategies to restore the institution's functions to its original mandate, which is to maintain network system stability.
This step is taken so that the community no longer depends on a single central organization for development direction. Considering EF's limited funds, which hold only about 0.16% of the total ETH supply, Vitalik believes it is time for the ecosystem to operate more freely and decentralize. As a consequence, EF will begin to divest projects outside their core functions and hand them over to external developer teams so they can seek funding independently.
In the future, EF will only focus on high-level security development, user privacy protection, and network resilience against external censorship and third-party intermediaries. Meanwhile, regarding ETH as a financial asset, Vitalik states that this is outside EF's scope. He urges other major asset holders in the community to also take part in supporting Ethereum's economic value.
