ME News: On April 18 (UTC+8), UN Secretary-General Guterres released a statement through his spokesperson, welcoming Iran’s announcement to fully open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels during the ceasefire period, and calling on all parties to fully restore and respect the strait’s international navigation rights and freedoms. The statement said that Guterres welcomed Iran’s announcement that same day that, for the remaining duration of the ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz would be fully open to all commercial ships, and that this measure was “a step in the right direction.” Guterres reiterated that the United Nations will continue to do its utmost to support peaceful resolution of the current Middle East conflict through diplomatic channels. He said he hopes that, on the basis of the ceasefire arrangements, this measure will help strengthen mutual trust among all parties and promote progress in the dialogue process mediated by Pakistan. This place, Hormuz, is never good news whenever it makes headlines, except this time.

The phrase "freedom of international navigation" sounds easy to say but hard to implement.
