I've been thinking lately about one of the biggest mysteries in the crypto world – who really is Satoshi Nakamoto? In 2010, the creator of Bitcoin simply disappeared from the internet, and since then, the community has been trying to solve this puzzle.
One of the most frequently mentioned candidates is Nick Szabo, a renowned cryptologist and cypherpunk. The interesting thing is that even ChatGPT and Elon Musk believe that Szabo fits the profile very well. Musk explains this by saying that Szabo's ideas align perfectly with Bitcoin's ideology as an alternative financial system.
Who exactly is Nick Szabo? Born in the United States in 1964, he has a solid educational background – a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Washington in 1989, plus a law degree from George Washington University. He was one of the key cypherpunks, people interested in cryptography and its potential to protect privacy. According to reports, his interest in encryption came from home – his father witnessed government crimes during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956.
So why do people think it’s him? In 1998, Szabo published the concept of Bit Gold – an idea for a decentralized cryptocurrency based on cryptographic principles. This is very similar to what Satoshi presented in the Bitcoin white paper eight years later. Additionally, Szabo is the author of the 1994 concept of smart contracts, which he later developed. This work became the foundation of Ethereum.
There are specific indicators pointing to him. Szabo’s writing style and Satoshi’s are similar, he has the necessary cryptographic skills, and one of Nakamoto’s wallets starts with the characters 1NS – initials of his surname. He also had motivation – he wanted to create a decentralized payment system.
But wait – Szabo himself denies this. And there are also arguments against. Some believe Satoshi was Japanese, and Szabo has no Japanese roots. Nakamoto had issues answering questions about Bitcoin’s legal aspects, claiming he was not a lawyer, while Szabo has a legal education. Moreover, Satoshi mentioned Bit Gold Szabo created, but did not suggest he was the one who built it.
In the end, without official confirmation, all of this remains speculation. Maybe Satoshi is someone entirely different – perhaps Dorian Nakamoto, Hal Finney, or even several people together. Nick Szabo certainly deserves recognition for his contribution to crypto, regardless of whether he authored the Bitcoin white paper.
What do you think? Who do you believe is behind the pseudonym Satoshi?
