Just getting into crypto trading and keep seeing PNL thrown around everywhere? Yeah, that confused me too at first. Let me break down what this actually means and why it matters for your trading.
PNL stands for Profit and Loss, but here's the thing - there are two types you need to know about, and they're completely different.
First, there's unrealized PNL. This is the money you could make (or lose) right now, but you haven't actually locked it in yet. Say you grabbed some ETH at 3,000 and it's now sitting at 3,500 - congrats, you're up 500 on paper. But that's just potential profit. Until you actually sell, it's not real money in your pocket. It can go back down just as fast.
Then there's realized PNL. This happens when you actually hit that sell button. Now your profit or loss becomes permanent. You sold at 3,500? Your realized PNL is +500. That's real.
There's also daily PNL, which shows you how you're doing just today. It's the sum of everything you've made or lost since the market opened. When you see it in green, you're winning today. Red means you're down - whether that's a temporary dip or actual losses depends on your positions.
Why should you care about understanding PNL meaning and how to read it? Because it's not just about knowing if you're up or down. It tells you something important about your trading decisions. Are you taking profits at the right time? Are you holding losers too long? Are you overexposed on one trade? Your PNL is literally showing you your behavior.
Looking at the current market action, BTC is trading around 76.78K (down 1.62% in 24h), ETH is at 2.12K (down 1.46%), and BNB is holding at 660.10 (up 0.18%). These are the kinds of moves that affect your PNL every single day.
The real skill isn't just making profit - it's understanding your PNL well enough to know when to cut losses and when to let winners run. Start paying attention to both your unrealized and realized numbers. That's how you actually improve.
What's your PNL looking like this week? Curious what the community is seeing out there.
