OpenAI CFO: Computing power shortage may require raising more funds

Abstract generation in progress
AIMPACT News, May 15 (UTC+8), OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar recently told Bloomberg that as the shortage of computing power becomes more severe, the company may need to raise more funds to meet business expansion needs. Friar pointed out that the costs of training and operating large language models are rapidly increasing, and the current supply of computing power is no longer sufficient to fully support OpenAI's development plans. The company is evaluating multiple financing options to ensure continued investment in key AI research and development. OpenAI has previously raised over $14 billion through multiple rounds of funding, with investors including Microsoft, Sequoia Capital, and other well-known institutions. In the context of increasingly fierce AI competition, computing power has become a core resource that major AI companies are competing for. This statement may lay the groundwork for OpenAI's next round of funding.

Friar was recruited from Nextdoor; financial management should be more stable than images generated by DALL-E.

So in the end, do we still have to rely on traditional finance for blood transfusions? Should the Web3 DePIN narrative start gaining momentum?

Computing power is power, and this round of OpenAI funding is probably going to be fully acquired by Microsoft again.
