Recently testing overseas accounts, I realized that virtual number verification really can save a lot of trouble. I’ve run into many pitfalls before—some platforms simply don’t receive verification codes at all, some have delays of half a day, which is extremely frustrating. Only later did I figure out that these virtual number services actually vary quite a bit.
I’ve used a few reliable ones: SMS-Activate responds the fastest, with verification codes arriving within about 10 seconds, and it covers many countries, making it suitable for cross-border application testing. There’s also Super Cloud SMS, which offers US numbers with response times around 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster, with receipts in 5-20 seconds, though sometimes slower during peak times. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can normally receive verification codes for Google, Twitter, and others. For domestic applications, Xiaoniao Verification can usually get codes in 5-15 seconds. My advice is to prepare 2-3 backup numbers to effectively avoid account blocking. Getsmscode is inexpensive and suitable for light use, but sometimes delays occur on less popular platforms.
The biggest pitfall with virtual numbers is that some number segments are shared, making it easy for the system to flag them as risky numbers. My experience is to choose reputable platforms and not just go for the cheapest options. If you don’t receive a verification code, try switching to a number from another country. If it’s just for API testing, any platform supporting API is enough, but if you want stable registration on overseas websites, it’s best to top up several virtual numbers to be safe. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is especially practical. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and broad coverage. For beginners, using these two will help avoid most pitfalls.
