AIMPACT News, May 15 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, the terms of Anthropic's new $30 billion funding round have been finalized, with a pre-money valuation of $900 billion, and the deal is expected to close within this month. The lead investors are the most noteworthy aspect of this funding round. Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, and Altimeter Capital are co-leading the round, each investing at least $2 billion. Among them, three are also major shareholders in OpenAI: Dragoneer invested nearly $3 billion in OpenAI last year, Sequoia has been betting on ChatGPT since 2021, and Altimeter CEO Brad Gerstner has publicly supported Sam Altman multiple times in podcasts and interviews. Now, they are simultaneously writing large checks for competitors whose valuations are about to surpass OpenAI, effectively signaling through real money that AI is a duopoly rather than a winner-takes-all market.
This funding round came very quickly. The dealmaker is Anthropic's first CFO Krishna Rao, who joined in May 2024. His most notable previous deal was securing $1 billion in emergency funding for Airbnb during the 2020 pandemic outbreak. After investors proactively approached him last month, he initiated negotiations and locked in terms within two weeks. Google and Amazon are expected not to participate in this round. Anthropic is still negotiating with other investors over remaining shares, and final terms may still be adjusted before the announcement. (Source: BlockBeats)
