I just reviewed the recent movements of ETH and something interesting caught my attention. With Ethereum trading around $2.13K (+0.21% in the last 24 hours), many are curious about who truly benefited the most from this exponential growth. 🔍
The most obvious answer is Vitalik Buterin, the platform's creator. And here’s the fascinating part: according to blockchain data, his current wealth is around $1.03 billion. Yes, one billion. But the interesting thing isn’t just the number, but how it’s distributed.
His portfolio is quite diversified. He has approximately 240,042 ETH valued at about $1.01 billion (most of his wealth), plus a significant amount in other assets like AETHWETH (~$12.2 million), WHITE (~$2.86 million), MOODENG (~$12.2M), and KNC (~$2.86M), among other smaller tokens.
But here’s what really matters: how did Vitalik Buterin build this fortune from practically nothing? The guy was born in Kolomna, Russia in 1994, but emigrated to Canada as a child. He studied Computer Science at Waterloo, but dropped out in 2014 to focus on something that seemed crazy at the time: Ethereum.
It all started when he discovered Bitcoin through his father in 2011. Then he co-founded Bitcoin Magazine and wrote about blockchain. But in 2013, he had the vision to create something more ambitious: a platform with smart contracts. On July 30, 2015, he launched Ethereum after raising $18 million in an ICO. Back then, ETH was only $0.31 per coin.
Since then, he has made Ethereum the second-largest cryptocurrency in the world, catalyzing the entire DeFi, NFTs, and decentralized applications revolution. He received the Thiel Fellowship of $100,000, appeared on Forbes 30 Under 30, and Fortune 40 Under 40.
What impresses me most about his story is that despite owning such massive wealth, Buterin remains known for his humility and simple attire. He’s not obsessed with money but with technical and social impact. He donated approximately one billion in Shiba Inu to a COVID-19 relief fund in India, in addition to funding medical research, refugee support, and environmental protection.
He continues to lead Ethereum’s development, overseeing Ethereum 2.0 plans to improve speed, security, and energy efficiency. It’s a reminder that the greatest wealth in crypto doesn’t always come from speculation but from building something that truly matters.
⚠️ Clarification: this is not investment advice, just an observation on how one of the biggest fortunes in blockchain technology was built.
