I just reviewed the historical NFT sales records, and honestly, it's fascinating to see how the digital art market has evolved. Pak's The Merge remains the most expensive NFT ever sold, with those $91.8 million in December 2021. The interesting part is that it wasn't a single piece, but 28,893 collectors bought 312,686 units at $575 each. That is, the very concept of 'shared ownership' is what made it so valuable.

What makes The Merge unique is precisely that: its revolutionary sales model where buyers acquire quantities that can be combined into larger fractions. Pak, the anonymous artist behind this, had been in the digital art world for decades before creating Archillect, his AI program. Then came his collaboration with Nifty Gateway for The Fungible Collection, which reached $16.8 million.

But The Merge isn't alone on the podium. Beeple, with Everydays: The First 5000 Days, took home $69 million at Christie's a few years ago. It was a collage of 5,000 individual works created over 5,000 consecutive days since 2007. Vignesh Sundaresan, known as MetaKovan, paid 42,329 ETH for that piece. Then there's Clock, another creation by Pak in collaboration with Julian Assange, which reached $52.7 million when AssangeDAO acquired it in February 2022.

Beeple's Human One also deserves mention: $29 million for a kinetic sculpture in 16K that is constantly updated. Beeple can modify it remotely, making it a living piece that evolves over time.

Now, when it comes to collections, CryptoPunks dominates the scene. The CryptoPunk #5822, uno de los nueve Alien Punks únicos, se vendió por 23 millones. El #7523, another alien but with a medical mask, sold for $11.75 million at Sotheby's. The #4156, un simio raro, pasó de 1.25 millones a 10.26 millones en apenas diez meses. El #5577 went for $7.7 million, the #3100 por 7.67 millones, y el #7804 for $7.57 million. These numbers show why CryptoPunks remains a reference: it was one of the first NFT projects on Ethereum in 2017, laying the groundwork for everything that came after.

TPunk #3442, bought by Justin Sun in 2021 for 120 million TRX ($10.5 million), is known as 'The Jester' because it resembles the Batman villain. It was the most expensive NFT ever sold on the Tron blockchain.

Others that broke records include Ringers #109 by Dmitri Cherniak for $6.93 million, Right-Click and Save As Guy by XCOPY for $7 million, and Crossroad by Beeple for $6.6 million in February 2021, which was a 10-second short about the 2020 presidential elections.

What I observe is that the most expensive NFT always has something in common: real scarcity, the artist's reputation, and something that transcends purely visual appeal. Whether it's an innovative concept like The Merge's model, a political cause like Clock, or the dedication of 5,000 days like Everydays. The market rewards uniqueness and meaning.

Axie Infinity and Bored Ape Yacht Club have also moved billions in total volume, although their individual pieces don't reach the prices of these records. Reports indicate that 95% of NFTs practically have no value, but those established collections maintain high reserve prices.

In conclusion, although the NFT market is extremely volatile, the most expensive NFTs are still those with unique stories, recognized creators, and concepts that go beyond traditional art. Pak and Beeple have demonstrated that digital art can reach valuations rivaling physical masterpieces. It's a space that continues to evolve, and while many speculate about future profitability, the historical milestones we've seen are undeniable.
