Recently, I was bothered again by the issue of temporary verification codes, and I finally understood why so many people use virtual phone numbers for this purpose. Registering on overseas websites, testing APIs, verifying accounts... buying a new SIM card each time is just not practical, so I tried several SMS receiving platforms, learned from pitfalls and experiences, and finally compiled a few good options.
Actually, virtual phone number platforms are services that rent temporary numbers to receive SMS messages, covering many countries and regions worldwide. Unlike regular phone numbers, these platforms charge per use or monthly, and once used up, they’re done—protecting privacy and making testing convenient. I’ve tried SMS-Activate and 5SIM; verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, covering many countries, making cross-border application testing especially handy.
For domestic applications, Super Cloud SMS and Little Bird SMS are quite good. US numbers typically receive replies within 10-30 seconds, while Chinese numbers are faster, usually arriving in 5-20 seconds. However, note that some numbers are shared, and occasionally they may be flagged or restricted; switching to a different number range can solve this. If you need stability, it’s recommended to prepare several virtual numbers as backups so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid.
Here are some key points when using these platforms: don’t choose based solely on low prices; look for reputable and active providers. Shared numbers are more likely to be previously registered, so for less common applications, delays might be longer. Also, don’t rely on them as long-term primary numbers, as privacy and security cannot be fully guaranteed. Additionally, these virtual number services are only for protecting personal privacy, preventing spam, and registering social accounts—do not use them for other illegal purposes.
If you only need to test APIs occasionally, just pick a platform that supports API access; but if you need stable registration on a specific overseas site, it’s best to top up several numbers in advance. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is very practical and can save time. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and broad coverage, making them the top choices.
