The Governor of South Carolina Signs a Bill Establishing a Legal Framework to Support Cryptocurrencies and Oppose CBDCs
South Carolina signed S.163 into law on May 20th, creating a friendly environment for digital assets.
It allows individuals and businesses to use digital currencies for payments, does not prohibit self-custody or hardware wallets, and exempts related taxes;
it prohibits state agencies from accepting or requiring CBDC, reflecting an anti-CBDC stance.
There are no regional restrictions on mining; local governments cannot restrict mining in industrial zones, and mining, node operation, and on-chain applications are exempt from money transmission licenses.
Additionally, it provides basic definitions for blockchain, digital assets, and related terms.
States like Kentucky have previously passed similar legislation.
