Just spent way too much time comparing trading platforms in Australia and honestly, it's kind of a mess figuring out which one actually works for beginners. Like, everyone talks about the big names but nobody really breaks down what you're actually paying in fees. I was looking at some of these platforms and trying to do rough conversions - like if you're converting 150 AUD to USD, you're looking at around 107 USD depending on the rate, which matters when you're checking if withdrawal fees are worth it.
So here's what I found: Mitrade seems to be the one that doesn't overcomplicate things. They've got forex, stocks, crypto, all that stuff - over 100 assets - and they don't hit you with commissions upfront, just spreads. Plus they actually take AUD payments which is huge if you're Australian. The interface isn't trying to be fancy, it just works.
eToro's got this social trading thing where you can copy what other traders are doing, which honestly sounds useful if you're starting from zero. But fair warning, they charge for currency conversion and have inactivity fees after a while, so the costs add up.
Plus500 is super straightforward too - clean interface, easy to execute trades. But again, fees creep in with inactivity charges and currency conversion. IG Markets has all the advanced tools you could want but it feels like overkill for someone just getting started. CMC Markets and Pepperstone are more for people who know what they're doing.
The thing that gets me is how these platforms handle costs differently. When you're converting smaller amounts like 150 AUD to USD just to understand your costs, you realize how much these little fees matter. Some platforms are transparent about it, others make it confusing on purpose.
My take: if you're actually new to this, don't get seduced by platforms with 500 indicators and advanced charting. Pick something where you can understand what you're paying and actually execute a trade without getting lost in the interface. Mitrade checks those boxes for me, but honestly depends on what assets you actually want to trade.
