#GateSquarePizzaDay
On May 18, 2010, a man named Laszlo Hanyecz opened a thread on a bitcoin forum, saying that he would pay someone to order 2 large pizzas for him or to cook and deliver 2 large pizzas in exchange for 10,000 BTC. Laszlo simply said, “I want to have food delivered in exchange for bitcoin, I don’t have to order it or prepare it myself—just like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel: they bring you the food and you’re happy!”
Four days later, a man named Jeremy Sturdivant decided to accept the offer. On May 22, 2010, Jeremy ordered 2 large pizzas from Papa Johns for Laszlo, and Laszlo sent Jeremy 10,000 BTC in return.
This wasn’t the only time Laszlo spent thousands of bitcoins to buy pizza. Laszlo estimates that he spent 100,000 BTC on pizza in 2010. Laszlo also is the man who invented GPU mining and mined over 100,000 BTC in total.
Laszlo said he has no regrets about buying pizza with bitcoin. “I think it’s great to be involved in bitcoin’s early days,” he said.
Laszlo said, “I wanted to do the pizza thing because, to me, it was free pizza,” and “I got pizza because I contributed to an open-source project. Usually hobbies are a waste of time and money, but in this case, my hobby treated me to dinner.”
Later, Jeremy Sturdivant sold the 10,000 BTC he received from Laszlo and used the funds to travel around the US with his girlfriend.
Jeremy said, “I never knew how big it would become.” However, despite missing out on unlimited wealth, he said he was “proud” to be part of the global phenomenon.
In conclusion, Bitcoin Pizza Day is considered an important date in crypto culture.
The crypto community celebrates this day every year, aiming to remember bitcoin’s humble beginnings and the great potential it still has today.
