Entertainment is the softest anesthetic. Ancient rulers relied on violence, modern rulers rely on attention. As long as people immerse themselves daily in brief stimulations, emotional outbursts, and instant pleasures, it becomes difficult for them to form long-term goals. The greatest value of entertainment is not to make people happy, but to exhaust them. A society fragmented by countless short videos, trending topics, idols, and disputes finds it hard to have genuine collective action.
