Meta to lay off 8,000 people and reassign 7,000 to AI roles on May 20, U.S. time, as “Pods” restructure upend traditional team structures

Meta will carry out this year’s largest round of layoffs on May 20, U.S. time. About 8,000 people will be laid off, and another 7,000 will move from non-AI positions into AI-related functions, for a combined impact of 10% of employees. Reuters exclusively obtained internal documents that detail the restructuring plan.
More noteworthy is the “Pod” model replacing traditional teams. WSJ reports that Meta is embedding AI agents into work teams, with each “Pod” completing tasks through collaboration between a small number of humans and AI. This echoes the logic behind Anthropic’s acquisition of Stainless: AI companies are redefining the concept of “teams.” Meta’s AI capital expenditure budget is $115 billion to $135 billion. Zuckerberg’s bet on AI is the most aggressive among tech giants. Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Superintelligence Labs received $13.6 billion in funding, directly purchasing computing power from crypto mining farms. The competition for resources in the AI arms race is spilling over into every corner where computing power is idle.$ETH
