Bill Gates would have surpassed Elon Musk with a wealth of up to $1.5 trillion if he had kept his Microsoft shares

If Bill Gates had kept all his shares in Microsoft, he would today be the world's first trillionaire with an estimated wealth of about $1.5 trillion, according to Benzinga magazine.

In the mid-1980s, Gates owned 49% of Microsoft, about 11.2 million shares. With the company's massive growth over the decades, the value of that stake would now be around $1.4 trillion, plus more than $100 billion in after-tax dividends.

But Gates has, over the past years, sold a large portion of his shares and expanded his investments through Cascade Investment, in addition to spending billions of dollars on philanthropy.
