Vitalik: On-chain only existing hashes still require storing and updating the data that verification proofs depend on.
BlockBeats, May 18, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin commented on the Ethereum state storage issue, saying that even if users store data themselves, and the blockchain only stores hashes and transactions contain only proofs, it still requires storing and updating the data used to verify those proofs—ultimately, that data is almost as large as the state itself. Vitalik said that there are solutions to the related problem, but they involve many components, and compared with today’s Ethereum, trade-offs must be made.
Previously, DeFi content writer marilyn100x.eth said that Ethereum has a state storage problem: developers pay a one-time fee to write data, while nodes bear the storage cost for the long term. However, EIP-8037 is not a time-weighted rent or ongoing fee; instead, it significantly increases the upfront gas cost for new contracts, accounts, and storage slots in order to control state growth during scaling.
