On May 18, anonymous blockchain researcher Specter revealed that a hacker group has generated over $14 million in total revenue by infiltrating X platform accounts to promote their tokens and facilitate cross-chain money laundering.
The group targeted investor Keith Gill, Pepethe Frog creator Matt Furie, and WinRAR project’s X accounts, with fund flows involving five networks: Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Tron, and Hyperliquid.
The group is also suspected of participating in a phishing attack in 2024 that caused victims to lose $2.45 million worth of wstETH.
The researcher analyzed that the token issuance platform on BNB Chain, bnbshare.fun, may be a key tool in this scam scheme, with the fee flow of the SHARE token created on the platform linked to the hacker’s wallet.
