OpenAI faces class-action lawsuit, accused of leaking user query privacy to Meta and others through tracking code
AIMPACT News, May 14 (UTC+8), the Federal Court of Southern California has accepted a class-action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of embedding code such as Facebook Pixel on the ChatGPT website, infringing on user privacy. When users submit queries, the query topics are sent in real-time to Meta along with cookies containing a Facebook unique ID, as part of the browser title. Although OpenAI claims to only share “limited identifiers” for advertising purposes, the plaintiffs argue that the query topics themselves are highly sensitive personal information. This case reveals the potential cost of free AI services: each user query and digital identity may become a traded product, contrasting ironically with many users’ original intention to use ChatGPT to avoid tracking.
