Finally breaking out of IDE plugins: GitHub launches Copilot standalone desktop version, supporting multiple Agents in parallel

AIMPACT News, May 16 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, GitHub announced the launch of the GitHub Copilot desktop technical preview. Copilot transforms from a single editor assistance tool into an independent application specifically designed for agent-driven development. Developers can now manage multiple AI agents simultaneously within one interface to handle different requirements and codebases. The new version abandons the traditional linear dialogue mode and introduces fully isolated parallel workflows. When multiple agent tasks are launched within the app, the system automatically creates separate Git worktrees and branches for each session. Developers can have one agent analyze and fix CI errors in another repository, while scheduling a second agent to write new feature code based on the current issue, all without interfering with local code in progress or needing to switch terminals and IDEs repeatedly. To close the development cycle, the app incorporates an Agent Merge mechanism, allowing agents to autonomously handle code review comments, fix test errors, and directly merge pull requests once conditions are met. Additionally, the new version natively supports connecting to MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and custom skills to integrate more local development tools. The desktop preview is currently available for early access, with Business and Enterprise subscription users able to use it directly upon enterprise authorization. (Source: BlockBeats)
