A person who is chronically poor, lacking, and without a sense of security is often not because they "don't want to have dignity," but because they don't even have the confidence to maintain their dignity. Because self-respect, in essence, comes with a cost. To refuse humiliation, you need an escape route; to stick to principles, you need resources; to not bow your head, you need to be able to bear the consequences. But when someone is struggling just to survive, they become increasingly inclined to: tolerate injustice, accept humiliation, please the strong, give up boundaries, suppress themselves. It's not that they are inherently weak, but reality keeps "flattening" them.
