You know, I recently took a look at the history of the most expensive NFTs and I’m simply amazed at how far this market has come. Digital art is now valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and this is no longer just hype—it’s reality.
Let’s start with the absolute leader. Merge by Pak is truly a phenomenon. In December 2021, this NFT sold for 91.8 million dollars. But here’s what’s interesting: it’s not a single object, but an entire collection of 312,686 copies that were purchased by nearly 29 thousand collectors. Each person paid about 575 dollars, but the total ended up being simply astronomical. This is perhaps the most expensive NFT by total value, although some people argue whether it’s considered one artwork or a combination.
Second place is held by Beeple. His “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” sold at a Christie’s auction in March 2021 for 69 million dollars. The starting price was only 100 dollars—can you imagine? It’s a collage of 5000 separate works that the artist created every day over 5000 days. The buyer, known as MetaKovan, used 42,329 ETH for this purchase. Now that’s quite something.
The third most expensive NFT is “Clock,” created by Pak in collaboration with Julian Assange. February 2022, 52.7 million dollars. It’s not just art—it’s a political manifesto. The timer on the NFT counts the days that Assange has spent in detention and updates every day. AssangeDAO, a group of more than 100 thousand supporters, bought this piece to support legal defense.
With a breeze, Beeple returned with “Human One”—a kinetic sculpture over 7 feet tall. November 2021, nearly 29 million dollars. This living artwork features a 16K display that constantly changes. Beeple can remotely update the content, turning it into a forever-evolving creation.
And then come CryptoPunks—wow, how many expensive NFTs are in this collection! CryptoPunk #5822, a rare alien punk with blue skin, sold for 23 million dollars. This is one of only nine Alien Punks in the entire series. The CEO of Chain acquired this rare экземпляр.
CryptoPunk #7523 is another alien, but this time in a medical mask. June 2021, Sotheby’s auction, 11.75 million dollars. At the time, it was a record for the series. Plus, a rare knitted hat and an earring—a rarity combo.
Now for the interesting one—TPunk #3442. Justin Sun, CEO of Tron, bought it for 120 million TRX (10.5 million dollars) in August 2021. It’s known as the “Joker” because it resembles the Batman character. After this purchase, the entire TPunk market skyrocketed, and it became the most expensive NFT on the Tron blockchain.
CryptoPunk #4156— a monkey punk, one of 24 available. It has been sold multiple times, most recently in December for 10.26 million dollars. It’s shocking that just 10 months earlier it sold for 1.25 million. It has a rare bandana (only 5% of punks) and a unique trait (only 2%).
CryptoPunk #5577— another monkey punk, February 2022, 7.7 million dollars. It’s believed that Robert Leshner, the founder of Compound, bought it. It has only one attribute (2% of punks have this), plus a cowboy hat (only 1%).
CryptoPunk #3100— an alien punk for 7.67 million dollars. This was the first listing for sale since it was created in 2017. Comes with a rare headband and a unique trait.
CryptoPunk #7804— a rare alien with a pipe (only 317 punks), a hat (254 punks), and sunglasses (378 punks). Sold for 7.57 million dollars. The combination of rarities makes it very valuable.
XCOPY created “Right-click and Save As Guy”—a work sold for 7 million dollars to Kozomo de Medici, a prestigious NFT collector. This piece became iconic—the title itself is a joke about those who think NFTs can simply be downloaded with a right-click. It was originally sold for 1 ETH (about 90 dollars).
Ringers #109 by Дмитрия Черняка — 6.93 million dollars. A series of 1000 generative works on Art Blocks, consisting of strings and nails. Even the cheapest экземпляр costs about 88 thousand dollars. This is the most expensive NFT on the Art Blocks platform.
CryptoPunk #8857— a zombie punk with exaggerated hair and 3D glasses. One of 88 Zombie Punks. Sold for 6.63 million dollars on OpenSea.
And finally, “Crossroads” by Beeple— 6.6 million dollars, February 2021. This was a record at the time. A 10-second film created in response to the 2020 US presidential election. Depending on the outcome, the film shows different endings. What’s interesting is that it sold out even before the election.
Overall, if you look at the total sales volume of collections, Axie Infinity leads with 4.27 billion dollars, while Bored Ape Yacht Club comes in at 3.16 billion. But when it comes to specific, single most expensive NFTs, Pak and Beeple clearly dominate.
What’s striking is how quickly the valuation of these assets has changed. The NFT market is incredibly volatile. Works that sold for millions a few years ago now cost very differently. And although 95% of NFTs practically have no value, those very rare and unique pieces continue to draw serious money.
As of January 2026, the total market capitalization of NFTs is estimated at about 2.6 billion dollars. It’s still a huge market despite downturns and fluctuations. CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and other collections remain “blue chips” with high reserve prices.
To be honest, the story of the most expensive NFTs is a story of how digital art conquered the world. From works by the anonymous artist Pak to Beeple’s kinetic sculptures, from rare punks to generative art—each of these most expensive NFTs tells its own story. And it seems this is only the beginning.
