Elon Musk: Grok Build will release the beta next week, programming ability won't approach Opus 4.6 until May

ME News Report, April 16 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, Elon Musk announced that xAI’s programming tool Grok Build will release a beta version next week, offering both app and terminal formats. This is Grok Build’s first clear release date. Grok Build targets Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. Previously, platform code disassembly showed that the tool can run locally via command line or remotely through a web interface. A feature that differentiates it from competitors is the Model Arena mode, where multiple AI agents handle the same programming task simultaneously, allowing users to compare results and select the best solution. In terms of billing, xAI is building a points-based system, where subscribers receive a fixed quota each month, with additional usage available on demand, consistent with the models used by Claude Code and Codex. However, Musk himself is aware of the gap. On April 12, he said on X that Grok’s programming ability “won’t approach Opus 4.6 until May, and may not catch up or surpass until June,” adding that “it’s a very short time by normal standards, but quite long in the AI field.” Opus 4.6 is currently Anthropic’s strongest Claude model. The beta version next week will likely not be the strongest in programming capability, but xAI is eager to secure a position in the AI programming tools market, first laying out the product form and business infrastructure.
