Recently, I thought of Vitalik Buterin again, and he is indeed a legendary figure worth deep understanding. This guy didn't just create Ethereum; he completely changed the development direction of the entire blockchain world.

Speaking of which, Vitalik Buterin's story is quite interesting. Born in 1994 in Kolomna, Russia, his family moved to Canada when he was six. From a young age, he showed remarkable mathematical talent and a passion for programming, which later became the foundation for his great technological creations. In high school, he started paying attention to Bitcoin and even wrote articles for Bitcoin magazines. But he gradually realized Bitcoin's limitations—it could only handle financial transactions and couldn't do much else.

In 2013, Vitalik Buterin published a white paper proposing the concept of Ethereum. This was not a simple improvement but a complete shift in thinking. He wanted to create a universal blockchain platform supporting smart contracts—that is, programs that can execute automatically. In 2014, he raised over $18 million through crowdfunding, and Ethereum officially launched in July 2015, immediately attracting many developers and entrepreneurs.

The core innovation of Ethereum is smart contracts. Vitalik developed the Solidity programming language for this purpose, which became the infrastructure of the entire Web3 ecosystem. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum allows developers to create full decentralized applications (DApps), build their own tokens, and implement complex business logic. This directly led to the emergence of new sectors like DeFi and NFTs.

Of course, the growth process was not smooth. In 2016, the DAO was hacked, losing about $60 million, which caused community division and led to the creation of Ethereum Classic (ETC). A bigger challenge was scalability— as the number of users increased, transaction speeds slowed, and costs rose. The Merge in September 2022 was a turning point; Ethereum shifted from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS), reducing energy consumption by 99% and greatly improving efficiency.

But Vitalik Buterin is not just a technical genius; he is also a compassionate philanthropist. During the Ukraine war, he donated about $5 million in cryptocurrency for humanitarian aid and donated over $1 million worth of Ethereum to Ukrainian charities. In October 2024, he transferred 400 Ethereum to a Ukrainian nonprofit organization. He has visited Ukraine multiple times, participated in key conferences like ETH Kyiv, and promoted blockchain development there.

Vitalik Buterin’s lifestyle is also quite unique—he has no fixed residence and often travels around the world attending various tech conferences. He is fluent in Chinese, which has helped him build broader connections and influence in Asia. He is full of confidence in the future of Web3, continuously advancing Ethereum 2.0 development, exploring sharding technology, and striving to bring more people into the blockchain ecosystem.

Overall, Vitalik Buterin has created not just a platform but a complete ecosystem. He demonstrates that technological innovation and human care can be combined, and proves that true leaders should have a broad vision and social responsibility. In the crypto world, his contributions are immeasurable.
