Recently, I was reviewing something that has always seemed fascinating to me: Elon Musk's relationship with cryptocurrencies. This guy is practically synonymous with the crypto sector in recent years, so I decided to investigate what assets he actually has in his portfolio and why.
It all started in 2021 when Tesla announced an investment of $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Although the company later sold most of its holdings, Musk confirmed that he personally still owns BTC. And it makes sense, right? Bitcoin remains the king of the market with a dominance of 57.35% in market capitalization. For Musk, it represents digital gold, a real store of value in times of economic uncertainty.
But Bitcoin isn't the only asset in his portfolio. During his appearance on "The ₿ Word" in 2021, he revealed that he also owns Ethereum. With an current price of $2.27K and a market cap of $274.50B, ETH is clearly the second pillar of his crypto strategy. The smart contract capabilities and the entire DeFi ecosystem built on Ethereum make it invaluable for someone thinking about the future of technology.
Now, if there's one thing Elon Musk doesn't hide, it's his love for Dogecoin. He literally calls it "the people's cryptocurrency" and has promoted its adoption at Tesla and SpaceX. DOGE is trading around $0.11 with a 2.35% drop in 24 hours, but that doesn't seem to bother him. What Musk sees in Dogecoin is different: low transaction fees, an incredibly loyal community, and, well, the meme factor that makes it accessible to ordinary people.
What’s interesting is the speculation surrounding other coins. Although Musk denies owning Shiba Inu, his tweets about dogs and related topics have moved entire markets. Shiba is at $0.00 with a 4.45% drop, while Floki Inu, named after Musk’s Shiba dog, falls 6.38%. He has never confirmed owning these tokens, but the influence is there anyway.
What’s clear to me is that Elon Musk doesn’t just invest in cryptocurrencies for speculation. He chooses assets he believes have real purpose: Bitcoin as a store of value, Ethereum for its technology, Dogecoin for its potential as a medium of exchange. It’s a quite different approach from many other billionaires in the crypto space.
