Around the time of Jesus’ crucifixion, the Gospels record extraordinary signs:

“The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”
— Matthew 27:51
“The earth did quake, and the rocks rent.”
— Matthew 27:51
“There was darkness over all the land.”
— Matthew 27:45
And rabbinic tradition (Talmud) later records that, in the final 40 years before the destruction of the Second Temple which Jesus foretold, the Temple signs changed:
The lot “for the Lord” no longer came up favorably.
The crimson thread no longer turned white.
The western lamp no longer remained lit.
The Temple doors opened by themselves.
— Yoma 39b
The Second Temple already lacked the Ark, the divine fire, the visible Shekhinah, prophecy, and the Urim and Thummim.
— Yoma 21b
Then Christ is crucified, the veil is torn, and the old order begins to pass away.
The Temple was still standing but something had changed.
Christ Himself becomes the true Temple.
The Temple was where God’s presence dwelt.
Christ is “Emmanuel”; God with us.
The Temple was where sacrifice was offered.
Christ is the Lamb of God.
The Temple was where atonement was made.
Christ is the final High Priest and the final offering.
The Temple veil was torn at His death because access to God was no longer through stone walls, priests, and repeated sacrifices.
Jesus had already said it:
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” They thought He meant the building. “But He was speaking about the temple of His body.”
— John 2:19–21
The Temple was still standing.
But the true Temple had arrived.
