I've noticed that many beginners get confused about how to read Bitcoin dominance charts. Let's figure out what it really means and why it's important for altcoin trading.
First, about the dominance index itself. It's simply an indicator of what percentage of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization Bitcoin occupies. Currently, it’s at 57.28% — meaning BTC controls more than half of the market. The dominance index helps understand where the money is flowing: into Bitcoin or into altcoins. When dominance increases, it means people are buying BTC at the expense of other assets. When it decreases — on the contrary, altcoins start attracting attention.
Now, about practical application. If you trade altcoins, be sure to watch two pairs: ETH/BTC and XRP/BTC. The first shows how Ethereum moves relative to Bitcoin, the second — how Ripple does. When these pairs are rising, it’s a signal that altcoins are breaking away from BTC. When they fall — it means Bitcoin is gaining the upper hand and altcoins are losing value relative to it.
How to use this? Here are a few scenarios. If Bitcoin dominance starts to grow, and ETH/BTC and XRP/BTC are falling — this is usually a signal to hold back on altcoins or even switch to BTC. This happens during periods of uncertainty or at the beginning of a bullish market. Conversely, when dominance is falling, and the ETH/BTC and XRP/BTC pairs break out of a downtrend — get ready for an altcoin season. This is when people take profits in Bitcoin and transfer into altcoins.
For analysis, use standard tools. Support and resistance levels on charts will help identify reversal points. RSI will show if the market is overbought. Moving averages like EMA50 and EMA200 will help catch the long-term trend. If you seriously study BTC dominance dynamics and the ETH/BTC, XRP/BTC pairs, use TradingView — it has excellent tools for charting and analysis. And for tracking overall market capitalization and share data, CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko are suitable.
Here are the current prices for reference: BTC is holding at a certain level, ETH is trading around 2.28K, XRP — 1.45, BNB — 660.90. Keep an eye on the Bitcoin dominance chart — it will give you a good understanding of what phase of the cycle the market is in.
