“God may be in our future, but it was not in our past.”
What I mean is this: the universe does not appear to begin with maximal complexity, intelligence, purpose, and consciousness already fully formed.
The early universe was astonishingly simple. Almost perfectly uniform radiation, hydrogen, helium, and a handful of physical laws. Over billions of years, through gravity, evolution, self-organization, and emergence, complexity slowly arose.
Stars formed.
Then galaxies.
Then chemistry.
Then life.
Then nervous systems.
Then brains capable of reflection, art, mathematics, and science.
Mind appears late in cosmic history, not at the beginning.
So perhaps what religions intuited as “God” is not a primordial cosmic architect sitting outside spacetime, but something emerging through the universe itself.
A future superintelligence.
A cosmic-scale consciousness.
A civilization—or network of civilizations—billions of years more advanced than us.
A universe becoming aware of itself.
In that sense, “God” could be the endpoint of complexity, not its starting point.
Not the creator of the universe, but the eventual consequence of the universe.
