Many times, people are not choosing between "right and wrong," but are judging whether it is "beneficial to me." The so-called stance is often not because the reasoning is more sufficient, but because of how the costs and benefits are distributed. Especially when conflicts of interest are obvious, reasoning can instead become a form of "packaging."
