Bitcoin core developer: Prefer to freeze 5.6 million BTC rather than fall into the hands of quantum hackers

ME News message. On April 16 (UTC+8), Bitcoin core developer Jameson Lopp said that, compared with potential future quantum computing attacks, he would rather “freeze” about 5600000 long-dormant BTC from the network than let attackers obtain them. These bitcoins have not moved for more than 10 years and may have been permanently lost, valued at about $420 billion based on current prices. If future breakthroughs in quantum computing lead to the cracking of private keys for old addresses, this portion of assets could be transferred again, causing severe market volatility and even a crisis of confidence. Although the community has recently put forward the BIP-361 proposal, it is still at an early stage and is not an officially pushed plan—more like a contingency plan to address “extreme risks.” (Source: ODAILY)
