The biggest problem in China's intellectual circles around 2000 years ago was that the three groups—those reading traditional classics, those studying scientific frontiers, and those engaging with Western modern thought—were completely disconnected. Almost none could engage in cross-disciplinary dialogue, let alone bridge all three realms.
