I just realized that many newcomers to crypto still confuse what Layer 1 and Layer 2 are. In fact, these are two basic but extremely important concepts to understand how blockchain works.

Let's start with Layer 1. Simply put, Layer 1 is the underlying blockchain—the foundation of everything. Bitcoin is the first Layer 1, with its own independent network that doesn't depend on any other platform. Ethereum is also a Layer 1, creating the entire DeFi and NFT ecosystem. Then there’s Solana, Cardano, Avalanche—all of them are self-operating Layer 1 blockchains where dApps are built directly.

The advantage of Layer 1 is its high security because each blockchain has its own security system—whether it's Proof of Work or Proof of Stake. But the problem is, when the network becomes overloaded, transaction speeds slow down, and fees skyrocket. Ethereum previously faced this issue quite severely.

That’s when Layer 2 becomes necessary. Layer 2 is basically solutions built on top of Layer 1 to address these problems. Polygon is a typical example—it acts as a Layer 2 for Ethereum, helping to significantly reduce fees and increase transaction speeds. Arbitrum and Optimism work similarly, easing the load on Ethereum’s main network. Even Bitcoin has the Lightning Network—a separate Layer 2 to make BTC transactions faster and cheaper.

The interesting part is that Layer 2 still inherits security from its parent Layer 1 but achieves lower speeds and fees. However, because they depend on Layer 1, sometimes transferring transactions between these two layers can be a bit more complex.

To sum up, when you want to understand what Layer 1 and Layer 2 are: Layer 1 is the core blockchain responsible for managing the entire network and security, while Layer 2 is a set of solutions to boost speed and reduce costs. These two complement each other, not compete. I believe understanding this clearly will help you better grasp how the entire crypto ecosystem operates.
