Recently, I started thinking about something that many have probably noticed: Elon Musk's influence on the cryptocurrency market is simply disproportionate. The guy is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, the richest person on the planet, and somehow he has also become a kind of crypto influencer. His tweets move markets, his comments generate volatility. But what's behind all this? What cryptocurrencies does Elon Musk actually own and why?
Let's start with the basics. Bitcoin was his first major move in this space. In 2021, Tesla announced an investment of $1.5 billion in BTC, which was a key moment for institutional adoption. Although Tesla has sold most of its holdings, Musk has made it clear that he personally still owns Bitcoin. It makes sense, right? Bitcoin is the king of cryptocurrencies, dominating the market with a 57.37% share. For Musk, it represents digital gold, a store of value. Today, it hovers around $80.08K, and people still see it as a potential long-term wealth deposit.
Then there's Ethereum. He confirmed this during his appearance on "The ₿ Word" in 2021. ETH is different from Bitcoin because it goes beyond being just a currency. Smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs, innovative blockchain applications... all run on Ethereum. Musk sees it as an important player in the crypto ecosystem. Currently trading around $2.30K, with a market capitalization of $277.51B. It’s the second-largest cryptocurrency, and its technology is what truly makes it valuable.
Now, if we talk about Musk's favorite cryptocurrency, that is clearly Dogecoin. He doesn't hide it. He has called it "the people's cryptocurrency," promoted its use at Tesla and SpaceX, and basically turned DOGE into a phenomenon. It started as a meme, but Musk sees something in it: low fees, active community, potential as a medium of exchange. Today it's at $0.11 with a 4.65% drop in 24 hours, but that hasn't stopped Musk's support or his community's loyalty.
There are other coins that generate constant speculation. Shiba Inu and Floki Inu are obvious. Musk has denied owning SHIB, but his tweets about dogs and "Floki" have caused significant movements in these tokens. Floki, named after Musk's Shiba Inu, has gained attention although there's no proof he owns it. SHIB is at $0.00 (practically), FLOKI at $0.00003501 with a +3.59% in the last 24 hours.
What's interesting is to see how Elon Musk's influence on cryptocurrencies has gone beyond his personal holdings. His words carry market weight. Some see him as the "Dogefather," others as someone who simply believes in the potential of these technologies. Whatever the case, his relationship with the crypto world will continue to be one of the most watched factors in the market. If you want to follow these movements closely, Gate has good tools to monitor these cryptocurrencies in real time.
