I noticed the crypto market is taking a hit today, with major coins all in the red. Bitcoin is down around 1.85%, Ethereum dropped 2.42%, and even altcoins like Solana and XRP are feeling the pressure with losses around 2-2.5%. The real story here isn't one big news event - it's what's happening under the hood that's driving why crypto is crashing right now.
The main culprit appears to be liquidations cascading through the market. Over the past day alone, roughly 237 million worth of Bitcoin long positions got liquidated, which triggered a wave of forced selling. When you zoom out, BTC liquidations over the past week hit 2.16 billion, and the monthly total sits above 4.4 billion. That's massive. When Bitcoin drops, these liquidated longs turn into market sell orders, pushing the price lower and triggering even more liquidations - it's a vicious cycle.
Beyond the liquidations, leverage is being wiped out fast across the board. Open interest in perpetual futures fell about 4.4% just today, removing roughly 26 billion in exposure. Over the past month, total derivatives open interest is down around 34%, which tells you this deleveraging has been happening for weeks, not just today. There's also nervousness around large holders - some major Bitcoin addresses have unrealized losses that could spark selling pressure in a market that's already fragile.
The broader risk-off mood isn't helping either. Stocks in Europe are weakening, and concerns about monetary policy tightening have traders cutting risk everywhere. Why crypto is crashing ultimately comes down to this perfect storm: forced liquidations, deleveraging pressure, and a market already spooked by wider economic concerns.
Looking ahead, the key level to watch is 75,000 for Bitcoin. If it holds above that, we might see the market stabilize. A clear break below would put 70,000 in focus as the next support. For now, relief probably requires Bitcoin to stop falling and liquidations to slow down. Until that happens, expect volatility to stay elevated and any bounces to struggle holding gains. This isn't panic from a single catalyst - it's weeks of leverage being cleared out of an already stressed market.
