Just checked the charts and the market's been pretty rough lately. BTC is down around 1.4% today, sitting near $80.4K, while ETH is down about 2.2%. Most alts are following along, though some like Solana and BNB are holding up better. XRP is down roughly 1.5%. Nothing too dramatic on the surface, but the real story is what's happening under the hood.
The liquidations have been brutal. We're talking about billions in leverage getting wiped out across perpetual futures. Just yesterday alone, roughly $237 million in BTC long positions got liquidated. But here's the thing - this isn't just a today problem. Over the past week, BTC liquidations hit around $2.16 billion. Last month? Over $4.4 billion. That's weeks of deleveraging, not a one-day event.
When BTC drops, it cascades. Those liquidated longs turn into market sell orders, which pushes the price lower and triggers more liquidations. Since Bitcoin dominates derivatives trading, the pressure spreads to altcoins as people reduce risk across the board. It's a feedback loop that feeds on itself.
Open interest in perpetual futures dropped about 4.4% just yesterday, wiping out roughly $26 billion in exposure. Over the past month, total derivatives open interest is down around 34%. That tells you how much leverage has been clearing out of this market. Some large holders also took unrealized losses, which added to the nervousness.
The broader market isn't helping either. Stocks in Europe have been weak, and concerns about tighter monetary policy are creating a risk-off mood everywhere. When that happens, crypto tends to get hit harder. Sentiment has turned pretty fearful, and altcoins are under real stress.
So why is crypto dropping right now? It's not one headline. It's the combination of leverage unwinding, forced selling, and a wider risk-off attitude across markets. The key level everyone's watching is $75,000 for Bitcoin. If it holds there, we might see some stabilization. Break below that and $70,000 becomes the next target. Until the liquidations slow down and Bitcoin finds a floor, volatility will probably stay elevated and any bounces might struggle to stick.
