Been thinking about how to spot altcoin season properly, and honestly the altcoin season index is probably the most straightforward way to track it. Most people just watch Bitcoin dominance charts and guess, but there's actually a cleaner metric out there.

So here's the thing - crypto capital doesn't stay in one place. It rotates. Sometimes it's all about Bitcoin, sometimes it floods into altcoins. The altcoin season index basically measures exactly when that shift happens by tracking how the top 100 altcoins are performing against Bitcoin over the last 90 days.

The scoring is simple: 0 to 100. When you're looking at 0-25, Bitcoin is crushing it and altcoins are sleeping. That's Bitcoin season. Then you hit 25-75 and it's kind of a toss-up - no clear winner. But when that altcoin season index climbs above 75? That's when things get interesting. At least 75% of those top 100 altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin. Capital is rotating hard into alts.

What makes this useful is that it's not just one random metric - it's measuring actual performance data across a meaningful sample. You're looking at real market behavior, not sentiment or hype. The altcoin season index does the heavy lifting for you.

I've noticed that during actual altcoin season, the action moves into stuff like Ethereum, XRP, and mid-cap coins where you can see real volatility and real moves. Bitcoin's still important obviously, but it's not carrying the whole market. Meanwhile in Bitcoin season? Everything else just consolidates while BTC does its thing. The capital flows are completely different.

What I like about using this as a positioning tool is you can actually make decisions around it. If the altcoin season index is climbing, you might want to shift more of your portfolio into alts. When it's dropping back down, maybe it's time to tighten up and reduce exposure. It's not foolproof - market rotations can happen fast and not every altcoin moves the same way even during altcoin season - but it gives you a framework.

The thing most people miss is that this isn't just descriptive data. You can combine it with other signals like RSI or the Fear & Greed Index and suddenly you've got a much clearer picture of what's actually happening. You're reading the market from multiple angles instead of just guessing.

Obviously there are caveats. The altcoin season index reflects broad market trends, not guarantees for any single asset. External stuff - news, liquidity shocks, macro events - can throw things off. And the index is measuring the top 100, so smaller altcoins might not follow the same pattern. It's a tool, not a crystal ball.

But if you're trying to understand when capital is rotating from Bitcoin into altcoins, this is probably the cleanest way to see it. The altcoin season index takes the guesswork out of it. In a market that moves in cycles, being able to identify those shifts early can be the difference between timing it right and chasing the move too late.
