It is reported that Tesla is developing a new compact SUV.
ME News report, April 9 (UTC+8). According to sources, Tesla is developing a brand-new, smaller, and more affordable electric SUV. In recent weeks, the company has contacted suppliers to discuss the plan details for this compact SUV. It will be a new vehicle rather than a refresh of Tesla’s existing Model 3 or Model Y. The sources say the compact SUV will be produced in China, while another source says Tesla also plans to expand production to the United States and Europe.
The car is 4.28 meters long (about 14 feet), which is clearly shorter than Tesla’s best-selling Model Y SUV (about 15.7 feet). Previously, Musk decided to cancel the much-anticipated low-cost electric vehicle project in 2024 and shift the company’s focus to robotaxis and humanoid robots. Whether this latest attempt at developing a smaller SUV signals a strategic return to mass-market autonomous electric vehicles—or whether the new car will be more in line with Tesla’s vision for fully autonomous driving cars—is a key question.
According to sources and an employee, this model could potentially serve both purposes at the same time. The employee declined to confirm or deny any details about a specific model but said that, overall, Tesla’s current goal is to build vehicles that are driverless while still offering manual driving options.
