U.S.-Iran Islamabad Negotiations Hit a Snag, Ceasefire Agreement Falls into Controversy
ME News Report, April 9 (UTC+8), Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Mughaddam, suddenly deleted a social media post announcing the delegation’s attendance at the conference in Pakistan, adding uncertainty to the first round of US-Iran peace talks scheduled to be held in Islamabad. The White House confirmed on Thursday that U.S. Vice President JD Vance will lead a delegation to Pakistan on Saturday to attend the negotiations. Regarding the ceasefire agreement reached this Tuesday, there are fundamental disagreements between the US and Iran:
• Lebanon issue: Iran insists that the ceasefire covers Lebanon and demands Israel stop attacking Hezbollah; Trump and Vance explicitly deny this, stating Lebanon has never been included in the ceasefire scope.
• Uranium enrichment issue: Iran advocates that the agreement guarantees its right to uranium enrichment, which the U.S. clearly states it will “absolutely not accept.”
Iranian Parliament Speaker Kalibaf issued a statement on Wednesday listing three so-called violations—Lebanon ceasefire not being observed, drone incursions into Iranian airspace, and denial of uranium enrichment rights—and directly stated, “Under these circumstances, bilateral ceasefire or negotiations are pointless.”
The core conflicts are as follows: Israel refuses to halt military actions against Hezbollah, the U.S. refuses Iran’s uranium enrichment, and negotiations have not yet begun, with cracks already appearing in the foundation. The future development depends on whether the Iranian delegation ultimately proceeds. (Source: BlockBeats)
