I've noticed that there are still many discussions around altcoins, but many people don't quite understand what they are and why they are needed in the first place. Briefly: altcoins are simply all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin. They initially appeared as attempts to solve the original issues: slow transactions, high energy consumption, and so on. But over time, projects have started developing in completely different directions, and now each one addresses its own specific goals.
Interestingly, today altcoins are divided into several categories. There are platforms for decentralized applications — like Ethereum and Solana. There are specialized tokens for DeFi, such as Uniswap and Aave. Stablecoins like USDT help reduce volatility. And yes, meme coins like Dogecoin are also on this list, although they are often underestimated.
When talking about promising altcoins for the coming years, I see a few clear favorites. Ethereum remains the leader among platforms — after switching to Proof-of-Stake, the network has become much more eco-friendly and scalable. Layer 2 solutions allow it to compete with faster chains. Cardano is interesting because of its scientific approach and focus on security — developing slowly but steadily. Polkadot addresses the issue of inter-blockchain interaction, which is becoming increasingly relevant. Solana attracts developers with high speed and low fees, although it has had stability issues.
As for Chainlink, it is simply an essential tool for smart contracts — without reliable oracles, DeFi simply cannot function properly. The demand for such solutions will only grow.
When choosing altcoins for yourself, you need to consider a few things. First, does the project solve a real problem and have practical applications? Second, who is behind it — the team and partners matter. Third, what are the plans for technological development? And of course, remember about volatility — the crypto market can change quickly.
Overall, altcoins continue to be a key part of the blockchain ecosystem. Projects like Ethereum, Cardano, Polkadot, and Solana offer interesting solutions and have real use cases. The main thing is not to chase after everything blindly, but to understand each project individually. By the way, on Gate.io it’s convenient to track price movements of these assets and see how they develop.
