There’s a Japanese internet influencer named Rei Kokubu who has recently sparked online discussion again. She claims she is from the year 2058, and that she previously predicted events such as Japan winning 27 gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, the Nikkei index crashing in March 2020, and Shinzo Abe stepping down in September—and it turns out that all of it actually happened. Because of that, her fans treat her as the “most accurate future predictor.”
Rei Kokubu says she was born in 2034 and studied architecture at Tokyo National University. In December 2019, she passed through to the present using a time-teleportation device. Even though time travel sounds like something straight out of science fiction, she has issued predictions one after another on social media, and it has genuinely drawn a lot of attention.
Most interesting of all is her story about crypto investing. Rei Kokubu reveals that she used her father’s account to buy a large amount—1,400 Ether coins—between late 2019 and early 2020, and then buried them in her parents’ yard, intending to dig them up again in 2058. She chose Ether instead of Bitcoin because, in her view, the Ethereum ecosystem will have more future applications and thus greater upside potential.
But she also made an interesting prediction: even though Bitcoin will rise to a sky-high value of 780 million yen (about $4.94 million), back then “you’ll only be able to sell, not buy.” What she means is that in the future, it may no longer be possible to buy new Bitcoin, or that Bitcoin’s inherent characteristics will no longer be suitable for trading. Hearing this, fans get excited and think there’s still profit to be made if they buy Bitcoin now.
Looking back, though, it’s hard to say just how “spot-on” Rei Kokubu’s predictions really are. Her “success stories” might simply be luck, post-hoc adjustments, or guesses based on the economic situation and political rumors at the time. Also, her statements do contain quite a few vague spots, and her wording is often ambiguous, making it even harder to judge whether they’re true.
To be honest, no one can really say right now whether Rei Kokubu’s whole story is genuine insight or just media hype. Still, she has undeniably driven discussion about cryptocurrencies, bringing Bitcoin and Ethereum back into the spotlight. At the moment, Bitcoin is a little over $82K, while Ether is around $2.4K. If you want to follow her future predictions, you need to assess your own risk tolerance first.
Even more importantly, her claim that “Bitcoin can only be sold” could potentially trigger speculation or panic selling. In the heat of these topics, investors still need to stay clear-headed—don’t let the noise blow you into buying or dumping. In the end, whether or not you believe Rei Kokubu truly comes from the future, investing always has to rely on your own judgment and risk management. After all, we’ll just have to see how the market develops next.
