U.S. Prosecutors Request Leniency for Former Celsius Executive Due to Cooperation

On May 6, U.S. prosecutors recommended a lighter sentence for former Celsius executive Roni Cohen-Pavon due to his substantial cooperation. Cohen-Pavon, who served as the Chief Revenue Officer of the bankrupt crypto lending platform Celsius, pleaded guilty in September 2023 to charges of fraud and conspiracy to manipulate the price of CEL tokens, a case related to the collapse of Celsius in 2022 that resulted in billions of dollars in losses. In a letter submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized Cohen-Pavon’s willingness to testify against former CEO Alex Mashinsky, noting that his cooperation could likely prompt Mashinsky to plead guilty earlier. Mashinsky has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, effective May 2025. The prosecutors did not propose a specific sentence but requested that the judge consider the sentencing guidelines for ‘appropriate leniency.’ Cohen-Pavon’s attorney argued that ‘the time served is sufficient,’ stating that he has taken full responsibility. The sentencing hearing originally scheduled for May 7 has been postponed to May 13.
