The U.S. prosecutors request a lenient sentence for former Celsius executives citing cooperation.
BlockBeats News, May 6 — U.S. prosecutors have recommended a lighter sentence for former Celsius executive Roni Cohen-Pavon due to his substantial cooperation. Cohen-Pavon served as Chief Revenue Officer of the bankrupt crypto lending platform Celsius and pleaded guilty in September 2023 to charges of fraud and conspiracy to manipulate the CEL token price. The case is related to Celsius’s collapse in 2022, which resulted in billions of dollars in losses.
In a letter submitted to the Southern District of New York federal court, U.S. prosecutor Jay Clayton emphasized that Cohen-Pavon is willing to testify against former CEO Alex Mashinsky. His cooperation, once made public, is likely to lead Mashinsky to plead guilty early, and Mashinsky has already been sentenced to 12 years in prison in May 2025. The prosecutor did not specify a sentence but requested the judge to consider a “appropriate reduction” based on sentencing guidelines. Cohen-Pavon’s lawyer requested “time served,” stating he has taken full responsibility, and the sentencing hearing originally scheduled for May 7 has been postponed to May 13.
