U.S. Defense Secretary: Two American commercial ships have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz; the ceasefire has not yet ended
ME News Report, May 5th (UTC+8), U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that under U.S. military escort, two American commercial ships have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrating that the waterway is currently “maintained as open.” This operation is part of the U.S. “Freedom of Navigation” initiative, aimed at protecting commercial shipping from Iranian interference. Austin emphasized that this action is defensive in nature, and the U.S. military does not need to enter Iranian territorial waters or airspace, and it is independent of previous offensive actions against Iran. He also pointed out that the United States does not seek to escalate conflicts in the region but will continue to maintain a comprehensive blockade against Iran. Regarding the development of the situation, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the current Iranian-related attacks have not reached the threshold to restart large-scale military operations. Austin also warned that if Iran continues attacking commercial shipping, it will face “overwhelming firepower,” and called on the international community to intervene promptly and share responsibility for the safety of the waterways.
