Recently, I was asked what Phantom is exactly and why so many people in the crypto community use it. The answer is quite simple: it’s a non-custodial wallet that gives you full control over your digital money.

The interesting thing is that Phantom started out only for Solana, but now it supports a bunch of networks: Ethereum, Bitcoin, Polygon, Base, and more. Since it’s non-custodial, it means neither Phantom nor anyone else has access to your funds. You keep your recovery phrase, you control everything. That’s what many of us value about this kind of tool.

The wallet works both in browser and on mobile, and setup is surprisingly quick. Download the extension or app, create a password, store your recovery phrase in a safe place, and you’re done. On mobile, you have the advantage of using biometric authentication, which is quite convenient.

Once you log in, you see four main buttons: Receive, Send, Swap, and Buy. Receive is basically copying your public address so others can transfer crypto to you. Send is the opposite: you send funds to another wallet (but you need to make sure you’re on the correct network, because sending SOL to an Ethereum address doesn’t work). Swap is quite useful if you want to exchange one token for another without leaving the wallet. And Buy allows you to purchase crypto directly using a credit card or methods like Apple Pay.

A detail I like is that Phantom automatically shows the balances of the main tokens like SOL, ETH, and BTC, but you can customize which tokens you see. There’s an option to manage your token list, and honestly, it’s a good idea to disable any strange tokens you’ve received from unknown sources. They’re usually scams.

Another handy feature is that you can create multiple accounts within the same wallet using the same recovery phrase. This is useful if you want to separate different strategies or just keep things organized. Each account has its own public addresses for each blockchain.

In the menu below, you find more options: your NFT collection, transaction history, recent activity with dApps, and an explorer where you can search for projects and tokens. It’s quite comprehensive for a wallet.

Now, about security, there are some points you can’t ignore. Your recovery phrase is literally the master key to everything. If someone gets it, they can drain your wallet. So write it down, store it in a safe physical place, never in the cloud or as a note on your phone. If you’re on mobile, enable biometric authentication. And please, only connect to dApps you truly know and trust. Most crypto losses happen from connecting to malicious sites.

What makes Phantom attractive is exactly that: you have full control. There are no intermediaries holding your money. It’s your responsibility to keep it safe, but it’s also freedom. For anyone who wants to handle crypto seriously without relying on exchanges, Phantom is a solid and relatively easy-to-use option, even if you’re just starting out in this world.
