Recently, I’ve been thinking about how the blockchain industry has evolved at an almost dizzying speed. It’s hard to keep up, but the interesting part is seeing how this technology is being applied beyond the obvious. We all know about cryptocurrencies, exchanges, and lending platforms, but there’s a sector that many underestimate: blockchain gaming.
Look, blockchain games are not what they seem at first glance. Yes, they have mechanics similar to any traditional video game — complete missions, take care of virtual characters, all that. But the magic is in what happens behind the scenes. These games run on decentralized networks, which means you get real security, transparency, and something traditional games never offered: the ability to earn real cryptocurrencies while playing. Each has its own native token, and they also offer NFTs that you can trade. It’s basically giving real economic value to your in-game achievements.
Speaking of specific blockchain games, some have truly made a difference. Axie Infinity was one of the first to seriously exploit this — built on Ethereum, it lets you assemble teams of creature-like Pokémon called Axies for PvP battles. Each Axie is an NFT with unique traits, some reaching astronomical prices. The game generates profits with two tokens: AXS for top players in the arena, and SLP which you earn by winning battles.
Decentraland is another worth mentioning. It’s a full 3D world built on Ethereum where you can buy land, create experiences, and trade assets. It uses MANA as the main currency, and LAND and ESTATE as property NFTs. It’s like the metaverse many promised, but Decentraland actually built it.
The Sandbox follows a similar trend but with a more creative twist — it’s more like Minecraft but decentralized. You use SAND to trade land that you build on or upgrade. The idea is for players to be creators, not just consumers.
Then there’s Gods Unchained, a free collectible card game. The difference is that you truly own your cards as NFTs and can sell them. The GODS token lets you participate in game decisions and buy expansions.
And well, there’s also FatBoy, which is a blockchain adaptation of the classic Tamagotchi. You take care of your character, complete challenges, and earn FATTY tokens. It’s more casual but shows how even old game concepts can be reinvented with blockchain.
What I find interesting is that these blockchain games represent a real trend in gaming. It’s not just hype — there are active users, functioning economies, and genuine communities. If you enjoy playing occasionally, it’s definitely worth exploring this wave. Blockchain games offer something that traditional ones can’t: entertaining experiences where you can also earn real digital assets.
Of course, you have to be realistic — investing in crypto always carries risk, and returns are not guaranteed. But as a form of entertainment that also potentially generates income, blockchain games are quite interesting right now. If the idea appeals to you, you can check out any of these titles on Gate and see which one catches your eye.
